Distribution of Germanium in the Metallic Phases of Some Iron Meteorites

چکیده

Ge distributions in ten iron meteorites with bulk Ge contents of 8.7 to 2000 ppm have been measured by electron probe microanalysis. Ge is concentrated almost entirely in the metallic phases. It was redistributed in the temperature range at which the Widmanstatten pattern developed. Ge content shows a positive correlation with Ni content, reaching a maximum in taenite and a minimum in kamacite at the kamacite-taenite interface. The distribution coefficient of Ge between kamacite and taenite is relatively constant. The distribution of Ge is discussed in terms of its 'trace element behavior and its covariance with Ni.

Butler, missouri: an unusual iron meteorite.

The Butler iron meteorite has been found to have, with respect to other iron meteorites, an unusually high cobalt content (1.4 percent by weight), unusually high germanium contents in the kamacite and the taenite phases, and an unusually low cooling rate (0.5 degrees C/10(6) years). It is suggested that Butler formed in a different environment from that of the rest of the iron meteorites.

Core crystallization and silicate-metal mixing in the parent body of the IVA iron and stony-iron meteorites

We have analyzed metallic and silicate phases in the IVA iron meteorites and two related stony irons, Steinbach and Sgo JoHo Nepomuceno. Analyses of bulk metal phases in the two stony irons using INAA show that they plot as close to the chemical trends within group IVA as most IVA irons, indicating a common source. Our fractional crystallization models for the IVA chemical trends suggest that t...

Low temperature phase transformations in the metallic phases of iron and stony - iron meteorites

Analytical electron microscopY techniques were used to determine the Ni content and structure of kamacite and decomposed taenile (clear taenite I (tetrataenite). the cloudy zone. and clear taenite 2) in the metallic phases of meteorites. Clear taenite 1 contains 51.4—45.6 ± 1.3 wt% Ni and is ordered FeNi with three variants of the L l superstructure. The structure formed by an order/disorder tr...

LW TEMPERATURE PHASE TRANSFORMATIONS IN WE METAlLIC PHASES OF METEORITES

The metallic phases of meteorites are predominantly composed of Fe with B to 50 wtR Mi. During slow cooling (10-1 to 103°C per million years) be low 500°C three types of phase transformations take place: 1) Fe—Mi mar tensite (m2) decomposition to c2(ferrite) and y(austenite); 2) Decomposition of austenite to a so—called “cloudy border” of a and ; and 3) Partial ordering of 48 to 55 wtR Mi auste...

Metallic Iron in Meteorites as a Sensitive Tracer of Surface-volatile Interactions on Mars

Introduction: Meteorites on Mars (martian finds) are more than curiosities. They may provide a means to gauge the past and recent extent of water exposure across the martian latitudes. The many roles of water in solid, liquid, and vapor phases pose a set of outstanding questions relating to the geologic history and habitability of Mars. Because we are looking for evidence of trace amounts of wa...
